Writing Peer Assessment

writingaccuracycommunicationpracticepairslow prep15-20 min

Students evaluate and improve each other's writing through structured feedback.

Procedure

  1. Pair students; give clear assessment criteria or guiding questions.
  2. Students exchange writing and read carefully.
  3. Each reader provides written feedback (positive points + suggestions).
  4. Writers review feedback, ask clarifying questions, and plan revisions.

Tips

  • Use a positive-constructive-positive sandwich structure to build a safe feedback culture.
  • Give specific prompts (e.g. "Is the topic sentence clear?") to prevent vague comments.
  • Train students on what useful feedback looks like before the first session.
