Jumbled Statements

Students re-order a set of jumbled statements about events from a video clip into the correct sequence.
Procedure
- Play a short video clip (or extract from a dramatic film) with a clear sequence of events.
- While viewing, write a set of statements about the action on the board in jumbled order. Alternatively, each student writes one event during viewing; then put all statements on the board in jumbled order.
- Students discuss and expand each statement (Who? When? Why?), then try to sequence them correctly.
- Play the video again for students to get more detail and check the sequencing.
Tips
- Variation: use utterances instead of events. Each student writes down one thing someone says during viewing. After viewing, decide who said each utterance, to whom, when, where, why, and in what manner, then arrange chronologically.
- Students can create a quiz for other groups by selecting utterances and recording correct answers separately.
- Needs almost no advance preparation beyond choosing the video clip.
