Collective Story Writing

writingreadingfluencymainwhole-classlow prep20-30 minTBLT

Students collaboratively write stories by passing folded "books" around the class, each person contributing a title, illustration, or paragraph.

Procedure

  1. Give each student a blank piece of A4 paper. They fold it in half to make a "book."
  2. Students write a story title at the top of their book (30-second time limit). Encourage creativity.
  3. Students pass their book to the person next to them. That person draws a front-cover picture based on the title.
  4. Pass again. The next student writes the first sentence or short paragraph (depending on level).
  5. Continue passing and adding to the story several more times, depending on available time. Each round, the new writer continues the story.
  6. When the books return to their original owners (or time is up), read the stories aloud. Display the best ones in a class library.

Tips

  • Anonymity encourages risk-taking, especially helpful for students who lack confidence in writing
  • The resulting stories can be used for follow-up grammar, vocabulary, or reading comprehension work
  • Variation: use the same format for collaborative essays (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion)
  • Particularly effective in creating a safe platform for creative exploration
