Small groups discuss a real-life dilemma, negotiate, and reach agreement.
Procedure
- Present a written worksheet with background, problem, and required outcome type.
- Groups discuss and work toward agreement.
- Groups report back and justify their solution.
Six Outcome Types
- Suggest -- generate a list of solutions.
- Choose -- select the best option from alternatives.
- Rank -- order items by given criteria.
- Decide -- make a yes/no decision.
- Locate -- place items on a map or timeline.
- Arrange -- organise items to meet requirements.
Tips
- Embed ~10 target vocabulary words in the worksheet (150-300 words total).
- Avoid numbering items on the worksheet -- force learners to use descriptive language.
- Use pyramid procedure (individual, pair, group, class) to maximise speaking time.
