Shadowing Technique for Fluency Development

Learners listen to speech and repeat it immediately, copying rhythm, stress, and melody.

Procedure

  1. Choose a short, clear audio clip (10-30 seconds, level-appropriate).
  2. First play: Students listen only.
  3. Second play: Students shadow along with transcript support.
  4. Third play: Remove transcript; students shadow without support.
  5. Gradually extend clip length as students improve.

Tips

  • Focus on rhythm and flow over perfect accuracy -- messiness at the start is normal.
  • Even 5 minutes of daily practice builds significant improvement.
  • Let students record themselves and compare with the original for self-assessment.
