Shadow Reading

readingspeakinglisteningaccuracyfluencypracticeindividuallow prep10-15 min

Students read aloud simultaneously with an audio model, matching stress and intonation.

Procedure

  1. Give students the text and play the audio.
  2. First pass: students follow along silently, marking stress and intonation.
  3. Second pass: students read aloud simultaneously with the audio.
  4. Third pass: audio off — students read aloud alone, mimicking the model.
  5. Optional: record themselves and compare with the original.

Tips

  • Different from Shadowing (which is listening-based with no text).
  • Shadow Reading uses the written text as support, making it accessible at lower levels.
