Speed Dating

Timed conversation rounds with rotating partners, building fluency through repetition.

Also called: Carousel, Rotating Circles.

Procedure

1. Arrange students in two circles — inner faces out (stays), outer faces in (rotates).
2. Display or read a discussion prompt.
3. Pairs talk for 2-3 minutes.
4. Outer circle rotates one seat clockwise; give a new prompt.
5. After 4-5 rounds, debrief interesting points with the whole class.

Tips

• Give a 30-second warning before each rotation so conversations wrap up naturally.
• Repeating the same prompt across rounds builds fluency; changing prompts adds variety — choose based on your goal.
• If numbers are uneven, the teacher joins as a partner.
