Collocation Reconstruction
readingvocabularyaccuracypracticepairsmedium prep10-15 min
After reading a text, students fill in blanked-out collocations from memory.
Procedure
- Students read and work with a text (comprehension, discussion, etc.).
- Give them a version with key collocations blanked out (e.g., "make a …", "… advantage of").
- Pairs reconstruct the collocations from memory.
- Check against the original.
- Discuss any collocations they got wrong or didn't know.
Tips
- Blank the LESS predictable half of the collocation — "take …" is too easy, but "… advantage" forces recall of the verb.
