Task Repetition

Students do the same speaking task 3–4 times with different partners, then write a report with their final partner — fluency, risk-taking, and language play increase with each repetition.
Procedure
- Prime: Write discussion prompts on the board. Students do unguided planning — writing ideas and checking words. Notes must be put away before speaking.
- Task — Round 1: Pairs talk for 8–10 minutes on the topic.
- Task — Round 2: Change partners. Repeat the same conversation (no notes).
- Task — Round 3: Change partners again.
- Report: With the final partner, write up a joint report of the conversation.
- Teacher feedback: Read reports aloud, correct and recast, push for more detail through follow-up questions.
Tips
- The repetition is the point — fluency, confidence, and language complexity all increase measurably with each round.
- Students naturally experiment with new language and take more risks in later rounds.
- Banning notes during the task forces genuine oral communication.
- The written report at the end provides a natural focus on form.
- Works with almost any personal topic: pets, holidays, family, memorable experiences.
