Check-Underline-Question

Students mark a text three ways: tick (knew), underline (new), question mark (want to know more).
Procedure
- Students read a text with three markers: ✓ (already knew this), underline (new information), ? (want to know more).
- Pairs compare markings — the differences are the interesting part.
- Discuss: what was new to you that I already knew, and vice versa?
- Generate 3 follow-up questions from the ? marks.
- Optional: research and answer the questions.
Tips
- The comparison reveals that "prior knowledge" varies hugely between students — this makes the sharing genuinely communicative, not just procedural.
