Check-Underline-Question

readingspeakingcommunicationaccuracymainpairsnone prep15-20 min

Students mark a text three ways: tick (knew), underline (new), question mark (want to know more).

Procedure

  1. Students read a text with three markers: ✓ (already knew this), underline (new information), ? (want to know more).
  2. Pairs compare markings — the differences are the interesting part.
  3. Discuss: what was new to you that I already knew, and vice versa?
  4. Generate 3 follow-up questions from the ? marks.
  5. Optional: research and answer the questions.

Tips

  • The comparison reveals that "prior knowledge" varies hugely between students — this makes the sharing genuinely communicative, not just procedural.
