Drawing My Natural World

speakingreadingaccuracypracticegroupslow prep15-20 min

In groups, one student reads a sentence, draws it without speaking, and teammates race to guess the exact sentence.

Procedure

  1. Prepare sentences sharing a common structure and theme (e.g., prepositions + present continuous + nature vocabulary). Write each on a separate card.
  2. Divide the class into groups of three.
  3. One child from each group comes to the front and reads the same sentence card.
  4. They return to their groups and, without speaking, draw the information.
  5. The first group to correctly say the full sentence wins a point.
  6. Rotate so the next person in each group reads the next sentence.
  7. Continue until all group members have had a turn.

Example Sentences

  • He/She is flying over a mountain.
  • He/She is jumping in a river.
  • He/She is riding around an island on a bike.
  • He/She is running on a beach.
  • He/She is swimming under the sea.
  • He/She is swimming across a lake.
  • He/She is walking behind a waterfall.
  • He/She is sitting on a mountain.

Tips

  • Versatile: construct sentences to match whatever vocabulary/grammar is currently being covered.
  • After the game, elicit the sentences back from students (drawings prompt memory) and write them on the board for language review.
  • Works well with teens too — not just young learners.
