Students label sections of a blank grid map (zoo, mall, hotel floor) according to the teacher's spoken description.
Procedure
- Draw or print a simple grid of rectangular/square sections (like a floor plan with 8-12 labelled areas). Give each student a blank copy plus a word list of items to place (e.g., animals for a zoo, shops for a mall).
- Ensure all students know the vocabulary on the word list.
- Describe the location of each item using your filled-in version as reference. Include plenty of repetition and pauses. Students write each item in the correct section.
- Students may stop you and ask clarification questions as you go.
- Display the completed plan and let students check their answers.
Tips
- The grid can represent anything: a zoo, shopping mall, hotel floor, supermarket, garden, school.
- Variation: after completing the plan, invite individual students to describe it back to you while you fill in a blank plan on the board.
- Variation: let students take turns telling the class where one item is; everyone fills in as each location is described.
