Secret Topic
speakinglisteningfluencycommunicationmainwhole-classnone prep10-15 min
Two students discuss a topic without naming it while the rest of the class listens and tries to figure out what it is, joining the conversation when they think they know.
Procedure
- Two students agree on a topic without telling the rest of the class.
- They start discussing their topic without mentioning it directly. The others listen. Anyone who thinks they know the topic joins the conversation. When about a third to half of the class have joined in, the game stops.
Tips
- The first time, demonstrate as one of the speakers yourself with a confident student.
- To make it easier and more fun, agree on a code word (e.g., "coffeepot" or "jackanory") that speakers substitute whenever they want to mention the topic.
- Variation: students who think they know must write it on paper and show the two speakers before being allowed to join.
- Can be played in teams with points awarded for the number of team members who figure it out.
- Practises vague language (for speakers) and interpretation of vague language (for listeners) — useful real-life skills.
- Best suited for upper-intermediate to advanced levels.
