Odd One Out

vocabularyaccuracypracticepairsmedium prep10-15 min

Students identify which word doesn't belong in a group and explain why.

Procedure

  1. Present groups of 4 words (e.g., furious, livid, annoyed, ecstatic).
  2. Students identify the odd one out.
  3. Crucially: explain WHY — what do the other three share?
  4. Discuss in pairs, then compare with other pairs.
  5. Accept multiple valid answers with good reasoning.

Tips

  • The explanation matters more than the answer — "ecstatic is positive while the others are negative" shows deeper understanding than just picking the word.
