Map-Reading Treasure Hunt
speakinglisteningcommunicationmainpairsmedium prep15-20 minTBLT
One student describes a route on a map while the partner follows and traces it on their own unmarked copy, then they switch roles.
Procedure
- One learner describes a pre-determined route along a map to their partner.
- The partner follows the route on their own unmarked map, tracing with a finger or drawing in pencil. They can ask questions to clarify.
- At the end, the partner marks the final point clearly on their map.
- Partners switch roles and repeat with a different route.
Tips
- Use simple street maps of real or imaginary towns, or maps of rural areas. Add place names suitable for your class and a "start here" arrow.
- To make it easier: add more street names and reference points (named buildings, etc.).
- To make it harder: introduce small differences between the two maps (a slightly different name, a missing detail).
- Works well online: show the map using Word or PowerPoint, and the listener uses a virtual pen to mark the route. The route can be easily erased for role switching.
