Students imagine themselves inside a picture and write sentences using "I am...", "I can see...", "I can hear...", "I feel...", then partners add "You..." sentences.
Procedure
- Hand out a varied assortment of interesting pictures showing landscapes and scenes with people. Allow time for students to choose one they like.
- Write sentence starters on the board: I am... / I can see... / I can hear... / I feel... / I...
- Students imagine they are in their chosen picture and write five sentences, one for each starter.
- In pairs, students swap papers. Each writes three new sentences on their partner's paper beginning with You....
- Students swap papers back, read, and discuss.
Tips
- Pictures can be photocopies, digital images, or magazine cutouts — any images showing interesting scenes work.
- Can also be done digitally with tools like Canva, photo-captioning apps, or shared noticeboards like Padlet.
- At higher levels, works well as a warm-up or fluency exercise for early finishers.
- Results in incidental vocabulary learning alongside grammar practice.
- Pictures with written texts can be displayed on the classroom wall.
