Red Card Green Card

speakingcommunicationwarmerwhole-classlow prep5-10 minTBLT

Teacher reads statements; students hold up red (disagree) or green (agree) cards and explain.

Procedure

  1. Give each student a red card and a green card (or red/green paper).
  2. Teacher reads a statement (e.g. "Homework is useful").
  3. Students hold up green (agree) or red (disagree).
  4. Teacher picks students from each side to explain their choice.
  5. Repeat with new statements.

Tips

  • Use statements related to lesson content to double as a lead-in activity.
  • Controversial but light-hearted statements generate the best discussion.
  • Works well as a quick opinion warm-up before a writing or speaking task.
