Small groups read the same text with assigned roles, then discuss.
Procedure
- Form groups of 4-5; all read the same text.
- Assign rotating roles: Discussion Leader, Summariser, Vocabulary Finder, Connector (links to real life), Passage Picker (selects key quotes).
- Students prepare their role individually.
- Group meets to discuss, each contributing from their role.
- Rotate roles for the next text.
Tips
- Model each role before the first session.
- The Discussion Leader prepares open-ended questions, NOT comprehension checks.
