Students match descriptions to pictures, captions to texts, words to definitions, or routes to maps — a tightly framed task that provides rich language exposure within a secure framework.
Procedure
- Prepare the matching materials: pictures + descriptions, captions + texts, labels + objects, written directions + maps.
- Teacher introduces the items with natural talk (builds exposure).
- Students listen/read and match items.
- Pairs compare matches and discuss any disagreements.
- Check answers as a class.
Variations
- Identity parade: Show 4 pictures of people; students listen to descriptions and match.
- Map directions: Students trace a route on a map from written or spoken directions.
- Caption match: Match captions or summaries to photos or longer texts.
- Definition match: Match words to jumbled definitions.
- One missing: Give N items and N-1 descriptions — students must identify which item was not described.
Tips
- Excellent for beginners and lower levels — the framework reduces anxiety while maintaining genuine comprehension.
- Teacher talk during set-up is valuable comprehensible input — don't rush it.
- Grading: start with teacher-led listen-and-match → move to recorded voice → then to reading-and-matching.
