Unexploded Dictation

listeningwritingaccuracypracticeindividuallow prep15-20 min

Learners transcribe a recording delivered at normal speaking speed, pausing and replaying it themselves until they produce an accurate transcription.

Procedure

  1. Record a text at normal speaking speed without the pauses that would normally be in a dictation.
  2. Learners load the recording onto their phones or devices.
  3. Each learner makes their own transcription, pausing and replaying the text as needed until they can produce an accurate version.
  4. Learners compare their transcription with the original text and note errors.

Tips

  • Well suited to self-study and homework as learners control their own pace.
  • Speed-adjustment software allows recordings to be slowed down without changing pitch, which helps lower-proficiency learners.
  • This technique develops real-world listening skills since the input is at natural speed.
  • Good for developing the ability to parse connected speech.
