Bingo (Spelling)
writinglisteningaccuracypracticewhole-classnone prep10-15 min
Students play bingo using words that follow particular spelling patterns, crossing off words as the teacher calls them out.
Procedure
- The class brainstorms at least 20 words, some following one spelling pattern (e.g. "a-e") and some following another (e.g. "ay"). Write all suggestions on the board.
- Students draw a 4x4 bingo grid in their notebooks and choose words from the board to fill their cards.
- Call out the words in random order. Students cross off any word they hear that is on their card.
- Decide the winning method: first to complete one row, one column, one diagonal, or the whole card. The winner calls "Bingo!" and reads out their winning words.
Tips
- Adaptable to any vocabulary set, not just spelling patterns
- Have students take turns calling out words (that are NOT on their own card) to increase participation
- For two winners: first to cross off all items AND last remaining — keeps the challenge going
- With monolingual classes, call out L1 equivalents instead of the English words for added challenge
