Fact-Finding Task
readingspeakingcommunicationmainpairslow prep15-20 minTBLT
Students research specific facts outside class (web, books, interviews), prepare to express them in English, and share their findings in the next lesson — extending listing into research.
Procedure
- Introduce the topic and do a priming phase in class.
- Set the homework: "Find 5 facts about [topic] to share next lesson. Write them down. Also note 3–4 useful words you could teach your partner."
- Next lesson: students work in pairs to compare and collate their facts.
- Groups report their most interesting findings to the class.
- Optional: turn findings into a quiz, a ranking task, or a mind map.
Example Prompts
- "Find 5 facts about Mount Etna to share next lesson."
- "Ask 3 people outside class what they think about cats as pets. List their reasons."
- "Find out the birthdays of 7 people you know. Bring the list."
Tips
- The homework bridges the gap between class and real-world language use.
- Facts found by students often lead naturally into more complex tasks (ranking, classifying, problem-solving).
- Having students note useful vocabulary to teach their partner promotes learner autonomy.
