Review Writing

readingwritingaccuracycommunicationmainindividuallow prep20-30 min

Students write a review of a text they've read, using evaluative language and evidence.

Procedure

  1. Read a text (article, story, essay).
  2. Discuss: what makes a good review? (opinion + evidence + recommendation).
  3. Students write a review (150-200 words).
  4. Pairs read each other's reviews.
  5. Would the review make you want to read the text? Why/why not?

Tips

  • Teach evaluative language explicitly: "compelling," "unconvincing," "the author effectively demonstrates..."
  • Reviews are one of the few genres students encounter daily (Amazon, IMDb, Google).
