Core skills in Task 1

Writing the introductory paragraph

The introductory paragraph is the first paragraph of your answer. It should be one sentence long and introduce essential information about the graph to the reader. For example, it should mention what type of graph it is, what the graph is about, and what time period it covers.

Writing the overview paragraph

The overview paragraph is the second paragraph of your answer. It should be about 2-3 sentences long and highlight the most significant overall features, such as main trends, similarities, and differences.

Writing the body paragraphs

Analyzing and organizing data

You should be able to read and understand visual data such as graphs, charts, and tables. You should also be able to organize the data into logical groups.

Describing figures

You should be able to describe figures in a variety of ways.

Comparing figures

You should be able to compare figures in a variety of ways, within and between sentences.

Describing and comparing trends

You should be able to describe and compare trends in a variety of ways, within and between sentences.

Describing steps in a process

You should be able to describe the steps of a process in detail.

Describing similarities and differences between maps

You should be able to describe similarities and differences between maps, typically over a period of time.
